Students have begun exploring three dimensional art while applying the principle of recycling. They compared two dimensional items with three dimensional items and discussed the differences. Instead of painting on a flat piece of paper, students learned that they could use a variety of recycled 3D surfaces as their canvas. Beginners painted on paper egg cartons while the Intermediates used various cardboard protective inserts. Kindergartners are using textured paper bottle protectors and the first and second graders are using boxes. They are experimenting with tempera paints and different brush sizes. The individual pieces will be assembled as collaborative class projects and displayed during A Taste of the Arts in April.

MUSIC with Ms. Khalil

This week in music, the students were excited to continue working on their performance. Using the songs from the spring musical, the students practiced many different music standards. The students either sang alone or in a group focusing on pitch, rhythm, diction, posture and had to maintain a steady tempo. Kindergarten through second grade also worked on these standards, plus adding in dynamics, expression and harmony. Each week I will focus on different techniques and skills to get them ready for the show. Please check your child’s folder for a parent letter, costume ideas, scripts, lyrics and music in the next few weeks. If you have any time over spring break, please review them with your child. SPANISH with Senora Alvarez

This week beginners colored el pájaro (the bird), while they chose and said the color of their preference, rojo, verde, azul y amarillo (red, green, blue and yellow). Intermediates, Pre-K and Kindergarten reviewed el pájaro y los animales de la granja (the bird and the animals of the farm). They colored their own pájaro (bird) while using different colors and describing it, saying the colors and the size, grande o pequeño (large or small). First and second grade reviewed the continents and countries, and finished reporting the weather in the world while practicing: Hace viento, está lloviendo, está nevando, hace mal tiempo, hace sol, hace frío y hace color (it is windy, it is raining, it is snowing, the weather is bad, it is sunny, it is cold and it is hot).

TECHNOLOGY with Mr. Anthony

Every student got to learn about the Monster Squad from Jump Rope for Heart. Each monster represents a healthy habit such as exercising or eating fruits and vegetables. To get the monsters up the roller coaster, students stomped their feet, breathed in through their nose and dog paddled to give each monster power. Students also practiced counting by counting dots on ten individual hearts and bringing each heart to the corresponding number on a heart box. First and second graders visited the Halle Heart Children’s Museum! They learned about staying active for at 60 minutes a day and how eating a balanced diet is great for their heart health.

P.E. with Mr. Anthony

This week students had a blast at the Jump Rope for Heart event! Thanks to all the volunteer parents, teachers, and assistants guiding students to different stations. Thank you to Camelback Desert School parents who made incredible donations for the American Heart Association for children with special hearts. The school spirit was tremendous and that led to a great day!
